Day 24: Laundry Room {31 Days of Easy Decluttering}

Welcome back to 31 Days of Easy Decluttering!  If you've missed any of the previous posts, there are links to all of them at the end of this post or in the tab at the top of the page.

Today's Easy Decluttering Project

Today we're talking about decluttering the laundry room.  I don't mean putting away any clean clothes or washing any dirty clothes that may be there.  {Of course, if you want to do those things you can.}  But I mean dealing with all the other things that clutter up your laundry room.

It's hard enough for most of us to be motivated to spend time in the laundry room but when it's cluttered it makes it even more overwhelming.

Laundry rooms may be in a corner of the basement and end up doubling as a storage area for things you don't use often.  Or they may be in a closet off your kitchen and wind up being a place to keep overflow kitchen items like paper towels or cases of water.  Or they may be near your garage / entry area and become a dumping ground for items that are coming and going from your home.

Wherever your laundry area is, it likely has clutter.  So let's tackle that clutter today and help make laundry a less overwhelming task!

Easy Decluttering Steps

Throughout the series, you'll follow these steps to complete each daily task.  {Don't forget to take before and after pictures to share too!}

Note: The main purpose of this series is to declutter so don't get overwhelmed doing too much cleaning.  Once your house is less cluttered it will be easier to clean so you can always come back and do it later!

Also, if you have the time, you can organize the space while you're doing this step, but don't get overwhelmed with too much organizing this month.  We're focused on decluttering!

Purging Tips for Laundry Rooms

There really aren't specific decluttering tips for the laundry room.  You're most likely going to be relocating things that belong somewhere else.  Or admitting that some things that are there are going to have to stay there and find a better way to organize them (baskets hide things well!).

These are the only laundry related things I can think that you may need to declutter:

  • Recycle any empty detergent bottles that are lying around
  • Finally toss those socks that have been mismatched for awhile {you know the ones you held onto because you kept hoping their mates would show up?!}

Mainly you need to focus on determining what the purpose of your laundry room is and then relocate anything that doesn't fit your vision.

If You're On A Roll...

You can spend some time cleaning your laundry room {lint and dust, detergent build-up, deep cleaning the washer and dryer, etc.}.  There are LOTS of cleaning tips below on my Cleaning & Cleaning Supplies board.

You can also take some time to think through your laundry routine and make changes to help make it less overwhelming.

Or, you can think through the types of clutter you dealt with today and the typical traffic patterns in your house, and come up with organizational solutions to prevent the clutter from returning.

Good luck with today's decluttering project!  I'd love to hear how you did, so please leave a comment below, or on FacebookGoogle+, or Pinterest!

Don't forget to share your pictures in the Facebook post for today or use the hashtag #31DaysEasyDecluttering when you pin your pictures. I'll repin some of my favourites.  Plus don't forget I'll have a link party at the end of the series where you can share your photos too!

Update:  I haven't been seeing many photos shared lately so I'm wondering if there's enough interest to have a link party.  Please comment on whether you have posts you'll link up or start sharing your pictures so I can decide. If there's not enough interest I will share some of the pictures I've seen on the last day instead.

How many items did you declutter from your laundry room today?  How do you organize your laundry room to help keep clutter away?

Happy organizing decluttering!

Here are all the posts in the series.

I link up at these great parties - Check them out!
