Day 9: Night Table {31 Days of Easy Decluttering}

Welcome back to 31 Days of Easy Decluttering!  If you've missed any of the previous posts, there are links to them all at the end of this post.

Today's Easy Decluttering Project

Today we're decluttering our night tables.  It's easy for nightstands to become dumping grounds because they are flat surfaces right beside our beds.  Our bedrooms should be places we can relax and unwind and it's hard to do that when we're faced with a cluttered bedside table.

Easy Decluttering Steps

Throughout the series, you'll follow these steps to complete each daily task.  {Don't forget to take before and after pictures to share too!}

Note: The main purpose of this series is to declutter so don't get overwhelmed doing too much cleaning.  Once your house is less cluttered it will be easier to clean so you can always come back and do it later!

Also, if you have the time, you can organize the space while you're doing this step, but don't get overwhelmed with too much organizing this month.  We're focused on decluttering!

Purging Tips for Your Night Table

Follow the steps listed above, and use these tips as you purge (step #5) your nightstand:

  • Throw out any garbage that has accumulated on or in your bedside table
  • Relocate items that don't belong in or on your night table (keeping in mind the purpose you determined in step one above)
  • Only store items that you really need easy access to during the night or first thing in the morning
  • Keep as little as possible on top of the night table so you have lots of "white space" on the surface (I'd suggest just a lamp, clock, and maybe a book you're currently reading)

  • There are tips in both those links for decluttering and organizing the inside of your nightstand too.  Or here's a great post with more tips for organizing your night table drawers.

  • If you enjoy watching videos to give you organizing ideas, here's a new one from Alejandra about organizing your bedside table.

  • If electronics are cluttering up your nightstand, there are creative ways to add chargers and power cords in the drawers so you can "hide" your electronics.  Here's one example.

What's the craziest item you decluttered from your nightstand today?  How do you organize your bedside table to keep the clutter at bay?  Any purging tips I missed?

Happy organizing decluttering!

Here are all the posts in the series.

  2. I did this one yesterday. Post can be found here:
    After a quick peek in my kid's rooms though, I know what they will be doing tonight.

    1. Great job on your bedside table Joann! It looks very uncluttered now :) Good luck with your kids' rooms!

  3. Craziest item I discovered decluttering my nightstand was an ultrasound from when i was 3 months pregnant with my 1.5 year old son! That means it has been there for over 2 years!

    1. Well an ultrasound is better than a pregnancy test... I've heard of people finding those years later! Glad you found it though :)

I love hearing from my readers! This is a great place to ask questions, answer questions, and share your organizing tips. Thank you so much for commenting! I look forward to getting to know you better :)
