Day 23: 31 Day Photo Decluttering Challenge

Got a lot of photos? Do you want to be able to enjoy your pictures instead of having to search and search to find your favourites? Does the thought of tackling your photo collection seem so overwhelming that you keep putting it off? Me too!

That's why this month I'm hosting the 31 Day Photo Decluttering Challenge! Each day I'll share tips to help you declutter your photo collection so you can really treasure and enjoy all the best ones. And I'll share my progress as I declutter my photos along with you :)

Today I'm talking about another great way to enjoy your photos... on your walls.

Today's Photo Decluttering Tip - Display Your Photos on Walls or Surfaces

Another great way to enjoy your photos is to display them on your walls or other surfaces of your home. Here are a few great ways to do this:

  • Enlarge photos, frame them and hang them on various walls
  • Have your favourite pictures turned into canvas art
  • Plak-it some photos
  • Print some pictures and display them in frames on book shelves or desks
  • Create a photo collage on the wall by your stairs
  • Put several pictures in a collage frame

By having special photos throughout your home you can revisit all your memories every time you see each picture!

You can group your displayed pictures in themes like these:

  • Your favourite wedding pictures
  • Baby pictures of each child
  • 1st year birthday pictures of each child
  • 1st day of school photos for each child
  • Annual family pictures
  • Most recent vacation photos
  • Best vacation ever photos
  • Family photos from each Christmas (you could display them every year in place of your regular family pictures)

You get the idea. If you've organized your photos thematically, you'll be able to find the pictures you want to display easily.

I've become a huge fan of canvas art ever since we had our house staged this spring. Our stager used quite a few canvas wrapped art pieces and they really had a classy and modern touch. So I was really excited to find out you can make your own canvas art with your very own pictures! Easy Canvas Prints is one place, and they're offering 85% off right now {affiliate links}.

You can get a variety of sizes from small to very large so you can have a single piece on one wall or a grouping of several related photos on another. You could even make a collage wall with several small canvas pieces made from your pictures. Such a great way to display your favourite photos!

My Photo Decluttering Progress

I decluttered my last remaining photo album of my pre-digital pics era. It was actually a scrapbook of sorts in a binder-style photo album, with tons of memories of my first cruise. I used sticky pages for pictures and small mementos, and page protectors for paperwork. It was fun flipping through it, but it takes up a ton of space on my shelf and I'd rather convert it into a photobook. So I took everything out and decluttered 138 items, which was 59% of everything in the album.

I couldn't believe some of the stuff I'd kept... travel magazines, shopping guides for each island we visited, daily news pages with news from our home country, even Bingo tickets that weren't winners. Those things were easy to let go of. The pictures were a bit tougher, but I let go of some of the scenery pics and some that were blurry or dark. I kept the daily newsletters of happenings on the ship, for interest's sake, but I may let go of those at some point.

Moving on to digital pics again now!

Your Turn!

Today your task is to choose some places in your home that you would like to display photos. Then decide which pictures you want to display. Choose the medium you will use to display them (frames on the wall, frames on a surface, canvas, plak-it, etc.). Then get them out on display. Keep decluttering your photos if you still have more to go through.
